John Martin
John Martin (1789-1854) was an English Romantic painter from Northumberland, largely self-taught after an apprenticeship in coach painting and heraldry. He made his name on enormous canvases of biblical destruction. Belshazzar's Feast drew crowds in 1821. The Great Day of His Wrath, painted near the end of his life, is the one most people know. Martin worked as an engraver too, and his mezzotints for Paradise Lost carried the images into homes that would never see an original. Critics of the day were sniffy about him. The public was not.
