About Keisai Eisen

Keisai Eisen (1790-1848) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist. He is known above all for sensuous bijin-ga, his portraits of women, and for his landscape prints. Among the latter is a celebrated series on the Kisokaido road, the old mountain highway between Edo and Kyoto. Eisen worked at a high point of the woodblock tradition, and his beauties carry a distinct mood of ease and poise.
