Utagawa Kuniyoshi brought Japanese woodblock printing to a dramatic peak, from thunderous warrior scenes to his fond, funny cats. Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) was one of the great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print. He was a leading light of the Utagawa school. Kuniyoshi earned fame for dramatic warrior and mythological scenes. He is loved just as much for his witty, affectionate pictures of cats.
